SEO · AEO · GEO · 2026 Guide
Your customers now ask ChatGPT and Google's AI Overviews before they ever see a list of links. This is how SEO, AEO and GEO fit together, why AI skips most Malaysian websites, and the four layers we build so a business gets ranked and named — with the numbers from doing it.
"Ranking gets you
listed. Being cited
gets you chosen."
The short answer
SEO gets your page ranked in Google's links. AEO gets your answer lifted into the reply — featured snippets and AI Overviews. GEO gets your brand named inside ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. They are layers of one job, not three separate services.
AI engines retrieve from search indexes — Google's, and largely Bing's for ChatGPT search — so a page that cannot rank is rarely cited. What decides who gets picked is whether the content is crawlable, answers the question directly, comes from a business the engine can recognise, and contains something specific enough to cite.
Realistic timeline: technical fixes in days, Google positions over 4–8 weeks, AI citations measured monthly against a fixed question set.
Why AI skips most sites
The same business, the same 20 questions a buyer would ask — and a different answer from every engine. Four gaps explain most of the difference.
Often by accident — an old robots.txt rule, or a hosting default. Cloudflare offers an AI-crawler block during setup; we found it switched on while moving our own site in September 2026.
Answer engines lift a paragraph, not a page. If the direct answer sits under three paragraphs of brand story, a competitor's clearer sentence gets used instead.
No Organization schema, a different name on Google Business Profile, directories and socials. If an AI can't be sure who you are, it names someone it is sure about.
"Award-winning, results-driven" gives an AI nothing to quote. Specific, dated, sourced numbers do — it's why our statistics page reached page 1 before any of our service pages.
What we build
The four layers, in order
Layer 1 — Crawlable. Allow search and AI crawlers in robots.txt, publish an llms.txt file, make sure pages render without JavaScript, and submit the sitemap to both Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. ChatGPT search leans heavily on Bing's index, so Bing is not optional.
Layer 2 — Answerable. Put a direct two-to-three-sentence answer at the top of every page, use question-shaped headings, and add FAQ and HowTo schema that matches the visible text word for word. Every guide on this site opens with a "short answer" box for exactly this reason.
Layer 3 — Recognisable. Build one entity graph — Organization and Person schema linked with sameAs to LinkedIn, Google Business Profile and directories — and keep the business name, address and phone identical everywhere.
Layer 4 — Citable. Publish original, dated, sourced data — statistics pages, published results, expert quotes in the press — then measure a fixed question set every month. Our Malaysia statistics page and Live Results Board are both built to be quoted.
